Following the signing of the CHIPS Act, President Joe Biden announced plans to attend the upcoming Intelgroundbreaking ceremony, according to a recently released White House memo. No date has been set, but road construction and land preparation has already begun on the first two state-of-the-art chip manufacturing factories at the nearly 1,000-acre site, where Intel is investing an initial $20 billion to boost production of advanced semiconductors to power a new generation of Intel products. The initial phase of the “Silicon Heartland” project is expected to create 3,000 Intel jobs with an average salary of $135,000 and 7,000 construction jobs over the course of the build.

The Intel project will also support tens of thousands of additional local long-term jobs across a broad ecosystem of suppliers and partners. In the President’s State of the Union address earlier this year, Biden described a “field of dreams on 1,000 acres outside of Columbus, Ohio, where America’s future is going to be built.” The state of Ohio will contribute $2 billon in incentives and JobsOhio committed $150 million in economic development and workforce training grants. New Albany is providing a 30-year, 100% property tax abatement on the value of the Intel buildings.

The “mega-site” can accommodate a total of eight chip factories – also known as “fabs” – as well as support operations and ecosystem partners. At full buildout, the total investment in the site could grow to as much as $100 billion over the next decade, making it one of the largest semiconductor manufacturing sites in the world.
