Volunteer Opportunities Abound for City Employees

A recent study by Deloitte finds that creating a culture that encourages volunteering can boost employee morale and attract the best talent among young workers. Luckily, New Albany companies and their employees will find abundant opportunities to volunteer locally. Healthy New Albany recruits volunteers for programs and events ranging from Community Gardens and Farmers Markets to its Food Pantry. Neighborhood Bridges New Albany lists Opportunities for Kindness, where donors can respond to requests to fund car repairs so an employee can get to work or provide furniture, household items and clothing for new residents.

Local nonprofit Buddy Up for Life uses volunteer “buddies” to encourage and empower athletes with Down syndrome as well as help with life skills, including cooking and communications. The Miracle League of New Albany’s volunteers serve as coaches and buddies to help children with disabilities play baseball. Celebrating One seeks volunteers for programs and service projects that motivate individuals to overcome life challenges. Canine Companions for Life needs volunteers to raise puppies or assist in its New Albany training center that provides service dogs. Wesley Hospice is looking for volunteers for companionship, pet visits, quilting, crafts and more. Lifetown Columbus volunteers who role playing as shopkeepers help youth with disabilities get real-world experience in Lifetown’s realistic indoor city.

As part of the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts, the McCoy Center for the Performing Arts uses volunteer greeters, ushers and ticket scanners at its performances and special events. New Albany Symphony Orchestra volunteers assist with its concerts, fundraisers and other events. Volunteers are an important part of Project Hero’s Honor Rides (2022 Ohio Honor Ride takes place in New Albany May 28) to support its rehabilitation and recoveries programs for Veterans and first responders. Volunteers help with everything from food and beverages to first aid and bike management for Pelotonia, a cycling weekend to raise money for cancer research. Volunteers are an important part of the success of the New Albany Walking Classic which takes place September 11 to benefit Healthy New Albany.
